Legalities

  • Front Windshield: The front windshield must allow at least 75% of light to pass through, meaning the tint must not be darker than a light shade. This ensures clear visibility for the driver, particularly in low-light conditions.

  • Front Side Windows: These must allow at least 70% of light to pass through. Tints darker than this on the front side windows are illegal, as they could obstruct the driver's vision and make it harder for law enforcement to see inside the vehicle*

  • Rear Side Windows and Rear Window: There are no specific restrictions on the darkness of the tint for rear side windows and the rear windshield in the UK. Drivers are allowed more flexibility with these windows, and they can be tinted as dark as desired. However, the vehicle must still meet the general safety requirements for visibility.

  • Reflective Tints: While reflective tints are not prohibited, they are subject to the same visibility rules as regular tints. Excessive reflectivity, especially on the front windows, can be dangerous as it increases glare, potentially affecting the driver's ability to see clearly.

  • Exemptions: There may be exemptions for specific medical conditions that require darker tints for protection from UV rays. In such cases, individuals may need to provide documentation or seek approval.

  • Compliance and Enforcement: It is important that window tints comply with the legal standards, as vehicles with illegal tints can fail the MOT (Ministry of Transport) test, and drivers could be fined or required to remove the tint. Police officers may also check the tint during a traffic stop using a light meter, and fines or penalties can be issued if the tint does not meet the legal requirements.

*Windows from factory do not have 100% Visible Light Transmission (VLT). Installing a 70% Film would take the VLT beyond the legalities.
